Campaign tracking guide

What is a UTM builder?

A UTM builder helps you attach consistent campaign parameters to destination URLs so analytics platforms can report which ads, emails, posts, or QR codes drove traffic and conversions.

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are query string fields such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. Optional fields like utm_term and utm_content add keyword or creative detail.

How to create a UTM link

Enter a destination URL, choose source and medium, name the campaign, optionally add term/content, then copy, export, or generate a QR code from the final URL.

How GA4 uses UTM source, medium, and campaign

GA4 uses these values in acquisition reporting. Consistent naming is critical. Optional parameters may not surface in every standard report.

UTM source examples

google, bing, facebook, instagram, linkedin, newsletter, whatsapp, affiliate, influencer, qr, offline.

UTM medium examples

cpc, paid_search, paid_social, organic_social, email, referral, affiliate, display, video, sms, whatsapp, qr, offline.

UTM campaign naming conventions

Prefer lowercase, one separator style, and structured names such as 2026_india_navratri_women_blouse_paid_social. Avoid generic names like test or campaign.

How to track Meta Ads

Use facebook or instagram as source with paid_social as medium, then differentiate creatives with utm_content.

How to track email campaigns

Common pattern: source=newsletter, medium=email, campaign=weekly_digest, content=hero_cta.

How to track influencer campaigns

Use a clear source for the creator or network, medium=influencer or paid_social, and a campaign name for the collaboration.

How to track WhatsApp campaigns

Tag broadcast or status landing URLs with whatsapp source/medium values and a specific campaign name.

How to track QR code campaigns

Build the UTM URL first, then encode it in a QR code. The QR itself does not provide analytics; your analytics platform does.

How to build UTM links in bulk

Use batch mode or CSV import with destination_url, utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign columns, then export CSV or TXT.

Why internal UTM links are a bad idea

Internal UTMs can overwrite the original acquisition source when users navigate your site, distorting attribution.

Common UTM mistakes

Inconsistent medium names, mixed case, spaces, duplicate parameters, tagging internal links, and putting personal data in query strings.

How to audit existing UTM URLs

Paste a URL into Inspect mode to review parameters, duplicates, missing fields, and naming inconsistencies, then rebuild cleanly.

Manual UTMs vs auto-tagging

Auto-tagging is platform-managed. Manual UTMs are portable across channels. Understand how both interact before combining them.

How to keep campaign naming consistent

Save naming conventions, use presets, normalize lowercase/separators, and export shared CSV/JSON for your team’s browser-local workflows.

FAQ

UTM builder FAQs

Answers about UTM parameters, GA4, bulk links, QR codes, privacy, and naming conventions.

What is a UTM builder?

A UTM builder creates campaign tracking URLs by adding parameters such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign to a destination link so analytics tools can attribute traffic.

Is this UTM builder free?

Yes. The Web6 UTM Builder is free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account.

Does Web6 store my campaign URLs?

No. Campaign URLs are built locally. Web6 servers do not receive your destinations, campaign names, or generated URLs. Saved campaigns stay in your browser only when you explicitly save them.

What is utm_source?

utm_source identifies the traffic source, such as google, newsletter, facebook, or an influencer name.

What is utm_medium?

utm_medium identifies the marketing channel, such as cpc, paid_social, email, referral, qr, or offline. Keep medium values consistent across campaigns.

What is utm_campaign?

utm_campaign names the promotion or initiative, for example summer_sale_2026 or product_launch.

What is utm_term?

utm_term is often used for paid search keywords or audience terms.

What is utm_content?

utm_content differentiates creatives, buttons, placements, or ad variants.

What is utm_id?

utm_id is an optional campaign ID used by some analytics and advertising platforms.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Many analytics systems treat values as case-sensitive for reporting consistency. This tool defaults to lowercase normalization so teams avoid mixed-case duplicates.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes, lowercase is the recommended default in this tool and helps keep GA4 reports consistent.

Can UTM parameters contain spaces?

Technically they can be encoded, but spaces create messy URLs. Prefer underscores or hyphens. The builder can normalize spaces automatically.

Can I use hyphens or underscores?

Yes. Choose one separator style for your organization and stick to it. Mixing paid-social and paid_social creates fragmented reports.

Can I add UTMs to a URL with existing query parameters?

Yes. Path, non-UTM query parameters, and hash fragments are preserved while campaign parameters are added.

What happens if a URL already has UTMs?

The tool detects existing campaign parameters and asks you to replace them, keep existing values, or remove and rebuild. It does not silently duplicate parameters.

Should I use UTMs on internal links?

No. Internal UTMs can overwrite the original acquisition source and distort attribution. Use UTMs for external ads, email, social, influencer, affiliate, QR, and offline campaigns.

Do UTMs affect SEO?

UTM query parameters are generally ignored for ranking when used on promotional links. Avoid cluttering canonical internal navigation with UTMs.

Do UTMs work with GA4?

Yes. Source, medium, and campaign are core acquisition dimensions. Optional GA4-related parameters may not appear in every report.

Do UTMs work with Google Ads?

Google Ads often relies on auto-tagging. Manual UTMs can still help for cross-platform consistency or non-Google analytics. Test your setup before launch.

What is the difference between auto-tagging and UTMs?

Auto-tagging adds Google click identifiers automatically. Manual UTMs are explicit source/medium/campaign values you control across channels.

Can I create UTM links for Meta Ads?

Yes. Use presets such as facebook/instagram with paid_social, then set campaign and content values for creatives.

Can I create UTM links for email?

Yes. Common values are source=newsletter and medium=email, with content marking the CTA.

Can I create UTM links for WhatsApp?

Yes. Use whatsapp source and medium presets, then generate or export the final URL.

Can I generate a QR code for a UTM link?

Yes. QR codes are generated locally as PNG or SVG. The QR encodes the same campaign URL and does not provide scan analytics by itself.

Can I create links in bulk?

Yes. Batch mode supports manual rows, CSV import/export, and up to 500 rows in the browser.

Can I export campaigns as CSV?

Yes. Batch export includes formula-injection protection for spreadsheet safety.

Can I save campaign presets?

Yes. You can save campaigns and naming conventions locally in this browser. They are not synced across devices.

Can I inspect an existing UTM URL?

Yes. Inspect mode shows base URL, UTM and other parameters, duplicates, missing recommended fields, and naming inconsistencies.

How long can a campaign URL be?

Browsers and channels vary. This tool warns when URLs become unusually long (around 2,048 characters) because some scanners and apps truncate links.

What information should never be placed in UTM parameters?

Avoid personal data, emails, phone numbers, access tokens, session IDs, passwords, and confidential notes. UTM values appear in URLs, logs, screenshots, and analytics tools.
