Direct costs: Forward freight, reverse freight, reattempts, packaging, marketing allocated to RTO, COD handling, ops, restocking, and inventory write-offs.
Inventory: Gross product value on RTO × recovery %, minus damaged and depreciation effects, plus optional salvage.
Lost sales vs direct cost: Lost sales value (RTO × AOV) is reported separately. Total RTO loss focuses on spent logistics, ads, ops, and unrecovered inventory — so product cost is not double-counted as both lost sales and COGS write-off without recovery.

Return to Origin means a shipment failed delivery and came back to the seller. It is different from a customer return after a successful delivery.
Divide failed-delivery orders by shipped orders and multiply by 100. Keep cancellation-before-shipment separate so the rate reflects courier outcomes.
Add spent logistics, packaging, allocated ads and ops, plus unrecovered inventory. Report lost sales value (RTO × AOV) separately so you do not double-count product economics.
Forward freight, reverse freight, reattempts, packaging, marketing waste, handling, confirmation, and inventory write-offs that remain after recovery assumptions.
Forward shipping moves the parcel out; reverse shipping brings undelivered stock back. Both usually apply when delivery fails.
Lost sales value is revenue that never collected. Direct RTO cost is cash already spent. This calculator keeps them distinct.
If you paid to acquire the order, RTO still consumes that spend. Allocating ads per RTO order shows marketing waste clearly.

Restricting COD in high-risk lanes can cut failed deliveries but may lose contribution from blocked checkouts. Model both sides before changing rules.
Prepaid often fails less often, yet discounts and gateway fees reduce the net win. Test conversion share carefully.
Confirming before dispatch can cancel bad orders and save forward/reverse freight. Include confirmation cost so net savings stay honest.
RTO never becomes a successful delivery. Returns happen after acceptance and may involve refunds. Keep the two funnels separate.
Mixing RTO with returns, ignoring reverse freight, forgetting ad waste, assuming 100% recovery, and using unsupported “industry average” rates.
